In 1996 one of the first colaborative web efforts got underway called Irish Space.
Engineers and artists sponsored by SGI, HBO and the Tralee Museum in Ireland created a collection of interactive vrml worlds to help grow interest in the Museums efforts to build a reproduction of the famous merchant ship the Jeanie Johnson. The JJ carried Irish imigrants to America during the potatoe famines and had the historically safest passage records of any vessel.
