All long time ago (In ancient times) Kamehameha III said "Ua mau ke ea 'o ka 'aina i ka pono 'o Hawai'i" (Sovereignty of the land perpetuated in the righteous of Hawai'i) after soveriegnty had been snatched by foreigners (The British).
In 1893 sovereignty was lost when Lili'uokalani was captured by some Americans, And the Kanaka maoli are waiting for sovereignty to be restored to Hawai'i again. Right now many tourist come to Hawai'i from California searching for the beauty of the islands. They don't know its true story.
