LOOK OUT BG Linux has struck a blow for computer users every where. For those of you living in the
dark, A couple of
weeks ago IBM announced that it had taken Equity Positions in Red Hat Software. Red Hat developed
a very popular installation CD for Linux (pronounced Leenewx). Linux is a Free, opened source operating system which unlike Windows 98 is not only truly multi-tasking, but stable too. I have been using Linux in one form or another for about 5 years now. Most ISP use a unix based system like Linux. I have one Linux machine that serves as a proxy between the internet and my 4 other work stations. People can set down at all 4 of those work stations and cruise the net while I edit a file in Xwindows, and I won't even notice a reduction in the performance of my text editor. Try that in Windows! For awhile, Linux was an operating system for the computer nerd. Part of that was because of the open source, which gave many nerds (and I use the word nerd in a positive way) the opportunity to become more familiar with the operating system and to contribute to it's future improvements. Some of those improvements have come in the way of graphical interfaces. Most Linux installs come complete with a graphical interface known as Xwindows. But there is a very powerful and customizable interface known as Gnome. This is a FREE utility that makes using Linux as easy as using Win98. Those into graphics can download the Linux version of PhotoShop called GIMP. This Free paint utility has more plug ins than Photoshop,,, including animation, special scripts and more. So why is everyone still on Windows? Well, windows is still the most written too operating system, partly because it has been promoted so successfully partly because BG had an unfair advantage over the personal computer market for a long time. But because Linux is open source and free, any one can improve or contribute to the os, even software developers. |
